Ex-Jersey City mayor can't run for freeholder Bergen Record A judge has dashed former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann's latest attempt at a political comeback in the race for a seat on the Hudson County Board of Freeholders. Ruling his nominating petitions lacked the minimum number of valid signatures, Superior Court Judge Maurice J. Gallipoli on Monday knocked McCann off the June Democratic primary ballot. The judge threw out 18 signatures, finding the petition signers were either Republicans, not registered voters, or lived outside the district. That left McCann nine signatures short of the 100 needed to run. The challenge was brought by the Hudson County Democratic Organization and Freeholder Nidia Davila-Colon, an aide to Sen. Robert G. Torricelli, D-N.J. With McCann out, she is facing Eliu Rivera in the primary in the 4th District, which is in Jersey City. Davila-Colon, elected in 1984, has the support of Rep. Robert Menendez, D-Union City, the county Democratic chairman. Rivera, a former Jersey City deputy mayor who is director of the Puerto Rican Association for Community Organization, is running on a slate backed by Jersey City Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham. McCann threw his hat in the race at the eleventh hour, believing he might have a good shot if the two Hispanic candidates split the vote, political observers said. |
