Of Colored People Jersey City Branch
JERSEY CITY The Jersey City Branch of the NAACP filed legal action against the Hudson
County Democratic Organization (which includes the Jersey City Democratic Party) at 11:00 a.m.
on Friday, December 5, 2003 in Federal Court at the Martin Luther King Federal Building in
Newark.
The NAACP has initiated legal action against the HCDO because of its conduct during the
Democratic Party Primary Election in the 31" Legislative District (election held June 3, 2003)
and a recent lawsuit that the civil rights organization felt was an attempt to disenfranchise voters
in the Jersey City portion of the 31" Legislative District, which is comprised of a majority of
African Americans and Latinos.
There will be a press conference on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 12 noon at St. Michael's
Church located at 137 Virginia Avenue to provide specific details about the legal action.
"The NAACP does not take partisan positions in elections, be we are definitely commited to
fighting racism and disenfranchisement." said Jersey City NAACP Branch President Kabili
Tayari. "Any attempt to suppress or take away the human and American constitutional right to
vote is wrong whether in Florida or Hudson County."
