Today's Jersey Journal Editorial is right on target, except for one point. The JJ is RIGHT with regard to the current budget crisis, that confrontation will not lead to compromise and accomodation. The JJ is RIGHT that the Mayor MUST work with the City Council to forge a compromise regarding refinancing of city debt. The JJ is RIGHT that threats of layoffs and financial collapse are unwarranted and counter-productive. Where the JJ is off base is in laying the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Mayor alone. It is unfortunate that Cunningham's CHIEF OF STAFF Bill Ayala acts like a junk yard dog rather than the diplomat necessary at this time of fisacal belt-tightening. Good faith dealings build trust and lead to compromise when things get tough. Respect for elected officials at every level of government and for all interested parties provides for a foundation of good faith and conciliation. As is so well stated in the Jersey Journal Editorial today, the kind of "demonizing and fingerpointing (instigated and perpetrated by Bill Ayala) are not conducive to developing a working relationship." Their only error is not recognizing that the current gutter-level discourse is a result of the low-brow approach of the Mayor's Chief of Staff, and will continue until there is a change at the upper levels of this administration.
