: UNION CITY-  33rd. District Assemblyman Rafael Fraguela today disavowed his 

: membership in the Republican Party and announced that he is returning to his roots as a Democrat. 

:   

:       Fraguela also announced that he will vote as a member of the Assembly Democratic Majority Caucus. Fraguela said his decision is irreversible and takes effect immediately. 

:   

:      He issued the following statement: 

:   

:      I truly regret the decision I made earlier this year when I decided to part ways with the Democratic Party. It is all the more clear to me now how my decision to leave the Democrats was based on local politics and not on any philosophical disagreement with the Party’s values and issues. 

:   

:      I have learned the hard way that there is little room for dissent in the Republican Caucus and their leadership is hostile in its dealings with independent-minded Hispanics. 

:   

:      Even when I left the Democratic Party, the Democrats always treated me with respect. 

:   

:      I believe my expulsion from the Assembly Republican Caucus was motivated out of racism because other Republicans had been allowed to cast votes counter to leadership’s position on other bills. 

:   

:      It was worse than a dual standard. Republican leaders failed to recognize the difference between party discipline and dictatorial politics. 

:   

:      As the son of Cuban refugees who left the island for the purpose of enjoying freedom, I am upset and disgusted with the way I was treated by Assembly Republican leaders. 

:   

:      I firmly believe my vote on the stem cell research legislation was in the best interest of my largely Hispanic constituency and the State of New Jersey as a whole. 

:   

:      I look forward to rejoining my true friends in the Democratic Caucus, where I fondly remember having the privilege to discuss issues and disagree without fear of intimidation or punishment. 

:   

:      I wish to come home to the party that always treated me with respect and that always gave me an opportunity to express my opinion and vote my conscience. 

:   

:     I am overjoyed at the prospects of coming home to the Democratic Party for the holidays
