: : : : Some person or persons unknown (to me anyhow) have installed a number of professionally made (red vinyl letters on white plastic board, around 24" X 18") signs that read RECALL STEVE LIPSKI. The word RECALL is big and bold and can be seen from blocks away. The artiste skimped on the STEVE LIPSKI message; you've basically got to be right at the pole in order to read it. I'd guess that someone driving is going to miss it (unless they are stopped just at the corner for a red light). There are 3 or 4 at Five Corners and another 3 or 4 at Summit and State Hwy (that I know of).

: : : : What's the point? Is this some sort of quid pro quo for the threats to recall some other members of the council? Does anybody know and care to relate the particulars?

: : : : Me, myself -- I'm a 33rd degree practitioner of the negative message AND a great lover of signs. BUT, considering that we are in the Holiday weeks, it seems both a tad unnecessarily nasty AND something of a waste of time/energy (considering that the general public is thinking of anything but politics now).

: : : You try to sound impartial but you are nothing but a Cunningham apologist. This is nasty but the racist cartoon about LHS stays on your site without comment. This site is the hi-tec UTN. Hi- tec but low brow.

: : Wunnerful! Wunnerful!

: : Yer, jess' doin' GREAT! Keep up the good work!

: : If you don't get what you want, THREATEN! (Don't for a second think that not everybody in Hudson County's got a cousin pickin' up a paycheck from the DPW in North Bergen.) If that don't work, pout and spout saccharin laced whine about how "YOU'RE NOT NICE!" Like nice means anything in this landscape of mushroom clouds, Last Suppers, and Marilyn Monroes.... And the calls for racial solidarity against the onslaught of the untermenschen are sooo nostalgic!

: : Strut, preen, prance, hoot and holler every 6 months or so (like ya' got a date with Monica Lewinksy) that a BIG NAME is gonna pull yer collective derriere out from amongst the glowing coals. Start with "fighting fire with fire" by enlisting someone "beloved in Greenville." That one really confused me when I heard it -- for the life of me, I had no idea who they were talking about. When I was informed that the individual in question was "Why, our candidate for Senate in the 31st, Harvey Smith, of course." I was wondering if it was like an inside joke or something. Basically, over the last ten years, the only people I ever heard extolling the virtues of Harvey Smith were the owner of an Italian deli (who lived out-of-town) and (I'm not making this up) the former head of the Hoboken Motorcycle Club. Next, as it becomes obvious that the only thing Smith is any good for is increasing the circulation of the Urban Times News, grab that notorious miserable failure and bottom scraper in public opinion polls, James McGreevey. (And, go figger, they even hadda twist HIS arm to get him to set foot in Hudson County. I really loved Doria havin' to calm down the Guv and reassure him that "You're in BAYONNE!" ... like the thought of being in Jersey City had the Guv's knees knockin') Come up with some sorta house survey showing how, though ranking just above Osama Bin Laden in popularity in every other nook and cranny, HUDSON LOVES McGREEVEY! (If that was true, what would that have said about the residents of Hudson County? ... the lobotomites answering the questions, anyhow.) Ignore the fact that, in the best tradition of the police state, for generations people in Hudson County have been trained to say whatever they think the Dem establishment wants to hear. (And don't pull outta the attic how McGreevey won big here in 2001 -- if it wasn't for the back stabbin' Don D orchestratin' the light opera of the missing 54 million, that never woulda happened. Get 'em off to the side, private-like, and the old timers will be happy to tell you how McGreevey makes them wanna throw up (he just reeks of the little snitch-crum in every grammar school class across the state), but, being that "SCHUNDLER RAN OFF WITH 54 MILLION" they held their nose and voted for James E.) And might one ask, who's next in what's startin' to look like what boxing legend Muhammad Ali called the Bum of the Month Club?

: : And afterwards, hold a press conference. Don't apologize to the voters! Don't announce how you're cleanin' house by shakin' out all the campaign sleazes who insulted everyone in Jersey City (and the intelligence of every voter in Hudson County). Nah, nah... throw a temper tantrum an' blame the Internet and the Urban Times News!

: Calm down old fella. No one threatened you that I saw. And that 54 million dollar lie is being perpetrated by your new hero GC. He can't get 2 sentences out without mentioning it. And because you personally don't like LHS you can justify having his character assasinated on your site. But poor Benedict Lipski gets a pole sign about him tacked up and it is too nasty for your sensibilities. Look in the mirror , you're a first class wacko and world class phoney. You worked for BS right. But you're a professional not a hack like the rest of us, right.Hey Anthony, he lost, get over it. You are of the same ilk as the flea bag Glazer except he spells better.

And, whenever you can grab a reporter by the sleeve, DON'T GIVE A STRAIGHT ANSWER TO NOTHIN'! Spin and rattle off all sorts of Howard Cosellesque "analysis" and prognostication. The latest and greatest example: the reelection chances of Lou Manzo. The guy's not even sworn in, and still there's every variety of yimmer and yammer, on and on, about how "without Glenn leading the ticket, we can knock Lou off 2 years from now." (Like the general public cares if political insiders are miffed. Whatever you do, don't use half a brain and (at least publicly) wish him luck and state how you earnestly hope that the constituents are well served.) I gotta laugh, the cookie-cutter press actually takes the hoopla seriously. Neither Lou Manzo nor Tony Chiappone probably knows yet where they keep the paper clips at the Statehouse, but every time someone shows up with a microphone, this 2 years from now parrot squawks like it's some profound question on a pressing issue.

In Hudson County politics, 2 years is like 200 years. What's Lou Manzo going to be running for at that fork in the road?

And, by the way, as a reading of the original text will elicit, the point was not halo-held-up-by-a-wire DON'T BE MEAN TO STEVE LIPSKI, but instead a rather callous assesment that the attack was a wasted effort due to poor timing. During the holidays, most people won't even notice. The ones that do notice, won't like it. Mind you, we are talking about the general public, not the inhabitants of 280 Grove, 583 Newark, et al. who visit this Board. It's hard for people that make a living off this stuff to imagine, but Jane and/or Joe Citizen don't want to hear about politcs except during election season. And this ignores the even more basic fact, if y'ain't payin' attention AND ya don't have a sharp set of peepers, y'ain't even gonna know the signs're there, NOHOW!

I've got nothing against Harvey Smith. Actually, raised up as I am from the dust of Jersey City, I'm in awe. How can somebody do so well by doing nothing? I wish I knew the secret.

After I was told the "beloved in Greenville" hocus pocus, I thought to myself, "Gee, this is the HCDO. That's like the Rolling Stones of politics. They must know something that I don't." So, just as I meander about town, I ask people what they think. The ones that have an opinion express contempt for Smith's candidacy. "Well," I think, "perhaps they are afraid you're making some sort of report that the mayor's office is gonna get wind of and so only will give what they figger is the "correct" response." So, now I seek out seasoned observers of Hudson County politics, but those who don't have any direct involvement in this election. Here's how the opinions ran: "I got no idea what the HCDO might be thinking," "Glenn's got it," and "Smith is gonna lose and lose big."

BTW, before you guys picked Smith, did you walk around and ask people what they thought? Or, stand in line at the supermarket and listen to what people are saying? Strangely enough, from what I've seen, NOBODY tries to find out what people are thinking (versus what they might tell a pollster).

During the campaign, I wrote that the attacks on Smith for being inarticulate were misplaced, for in interviews he conducted himself well. Smith didn't sink Smith. What ruined it for Smith was HIS CAMPAIGN. If Smith was portrayed as a good guy, champion of youth, family man, former college basketball star, etc., he'd have had a shot. Instead, we kept hearing only that Harvey was a TEAM PLAYER. Wake up guys! Maybe your bartender worries if you're happy, but the voters certainly don't!
