The trial involving Adan-Abreu's husband is scheduled to begin Feb. 24. In May, he pleaded innocent to all counts of the indictment.

Rene Abreu, of Fort Lee, whose operations include a mortgage company, was a fund-raiser for West New York Mayor Albio Sires, who is now speaker of the state Assembly.

Among the charges Rene Abreu faces is that he took protection money paid by an illegal gambling operation to then-West New York Police Chief Alexander V. Oriente "on behalf of a high-level West New York public official" from 1995 to 1997.

The official was not named in the indictment, but testimony given by Oriente in 1999 named state Assembly Speaker and West New York Mayor Albio Sires as the recipient of the payoffs.

Sires has denied the charges.
