To preserve the independence of the Legislature from the Governor, free Democrats offered the Senate Presidency to a number of Republicans. Sad to relate, all either felt unable to deal with New Jersey's problems, were afraid of the Democrats, had made deals with McGreevey, OR ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Once it became clear that the Senate Republicans would not seize the initiative, in a symbolic gesture, the free Democrats nominated Nia Gill for Senate President.
