I'm not going to criticize Senator Kenny for this. Actually though, I wasn't quite sure what he meant. Is Bernard Kenny referring to what's become the de rigueur photo op of the emoting public figure ladling out mashed potatoes to the disadvantaged? If that's the case, I won't blame him for participating in what the cookie-cutter press has turned into a required ceremonial function akin to benedictions of the Japanese Emperor. I will criticize the media for foisting this Little Nell routine on one and all. If celebrities want to help the poor, they first might consider coughing up some cash. Next, the Big Names can use their heft to increase public awareness, raise money, start training programs, establish subsidized housing, treatment programs, etc. Also, EVERYBODY might just do their job well so that all benefit. And to answer the peanut gallery that's clicking away to type WHAT ARE YOU DOING?, some time back I did a write up on a local social service program that's doing a great job and posted it at GET NJ. I was told that a foundation in California came across the Page and sent the local charity a check for $25,0000. I'm sure the dollars precipitated by the Web Page helped the poor of Hudson County a lot more than my running down there to offer a warm and hearty handshake. If Senator Kenny means that he's speaking with the poor to learn about the problems that they face and what sort of help they'd like to receive, then that's great. I've accused politicians and their staff of getting lost in a sauce of polls, reports, and studies. It's great if someone with clout is instead going out and just listening to what people have to say. : Kenny, who said he has been volunteering at a soup kitchen, said he had allowed his attention to turn away from the state's poor and disadvantaged for too long. : : PERHAPS HE IS LOOKING FOR "FORGIVENESS"
