NEW JERSEY GENERAL ASSEMBLY

CHIAPPONE ASSIGNED TO HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT, TELECOMMUNICATIONS, AND SENIORS ISSUES COMMITTEES

For Immediate Release:

On Friday January 16, Speaker of the General Assembly, Albio Sires announced Assembly Committee assignments and assigned Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone to the following three committees: Telecommunications and Utilities, Senior Issues, and Housing and Local Government. Stated Assemblyman Chiappone, “I want to thank the Speaker for assigning me to the committees chosen. The ‘Telecommunications and Utilities Committee’ was one of my top two choices and as Cable TV Committee Chairman for the City of Bayonne, I look forward to further effect positive changes on behalf of the cable subscribers of Bayonne and Jersey City and hope to eventually bring about true cable competition to our area. I feel that the knowledge I have gained from having helped drafted and enacted Bayonne’s Telecommunication Ordinance, will enable me to address important issues related to the telecommunication cell phone and data transmission industry. Additionally, with harsh rate increases in our PSE&G bills, I hope to become a staunch legislative advocate on behalf of our residents who have trouble keeping up with the high cost of their gas and electric bills.”

“I am absolutely thrilled to be appointed to the ‘Senior Issues Committee,’ as this committee was my favorite choice and one that I felt could empower me to help those who really need the loudest voice in Trenton; and that is our senior citizens. Living on fixed incomes, it is vital that seniors not be deprived of important services, imperative that their costs not be increased, and essential that their benefits not be reduced. Through this committee and in conjunction with my State Assembly office, I will make it a priority to meet with seniors, hear their concerns, and fight for their rights on this very important committee. If there was just one committee I could be appointed to, the Senior Issues Committee would be it.”

“Finally, I am excited to be placed on the “Housing and Local Government Committee”. This is a very interesting committee which deals with both housing and planning and development laws which relate to local and county government. In addition to finding ways to provide sensible development and affordable housing, I look forward to expanding the rights of residents to have input in local boards which make such important decisions. For instance, one important right of residents to appeal Zoning Board decisions to the City Council was taken away by our City Council. I will attempt to introduce legislation mandating that appeals of zoning boards be allowed to be made to the governing body of that community. Additionally, I will work to find ways to mandate the provision of adequate parking in all developments.”

The first committee meetings take place this Thursday at the Statehouse with the Telecommunication Committee meeting taking place at 10 am and the Senior Issues Committee meeting commencing at 2 pm. Residents who would like to discuss issues pertinent to these committees or other issues of importance can contact Assemblyman Chiappone at 201-437-3242 or stop in at his temporary State Assembly office at 618 Broadway.
