Rivera Headquarters Opening Draws Broad Community Support Urban Times News By: H. Doris Suarez (Jersey City) Saturday’s Grand Opening of the Jersey Avenue Campaign Headquarters of Eliu Rivera, candidate for the Hudson County Freeholder District 4, saw a turnout of a standing-room only crowd. Over two hundred enthusiastic supporters came to the opening to cheer the candidate who was flanked by who’s who of community activist and elected officials. Among those who lent their support to Rivera were Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham and his wife Sandra, acting County Executive, Bernard Hartnett, Freeholder Bill Braker, members of the ACCORN Organization, Det. Frank Lorenzo, President of the Hispanic Coalition several local public school teachers, local law enforcement officers, and several prominent Hispanic clergy. Rivera’s stump speech to the grass-roots community gathering spoke volumes about the depth and breadth of his support throughout the district neighborhoods. “His understanding of the issues of greatest concern to the community is the reason for this impressive turnout,” said Deputy Mayor Anthony Cruz. “Eliu’s long-standing support for this community through PACO and through his personal advocacy for our residents is the reason so many people are here today, and why they sill turnout for Eliu on Election Day.” Amongst the issues Rivera spoke about were how non-profit housing groups can work hand-in-hand with developers to build more affordable housing throughout Jersey City. “Mayor Cunningham’s tax enhancement policy speaks directly to our community’s need for greater effort to build affordable housing throughout Jersey City,” Rivera said. “I plan to continue my support for our residents by supporting Mayor Cunningham in his efforts, and expanding his policies on this issues on a county-wide basis.” Amongst the additional issues Rivera plans to address are the lack of recreational facilities throughout Jersey City and the County, and improving senior citizens services b modeling a countywide effort on his past award-winning successes with senior’s programs. “Hudson County has an incredible potential to improve the lives of all our residents,” Rivera said. “But we need to get past the negativity of the political arena in our community. As public officials, we must never lose focus on why we are here and to rise above the negativity that has permeated the political process in recent years. I ma running for office so that I can better serve our community, and for no other reason. I hope tat once the election passes that those who are given the public’s support will follow my lead an focus on the issues of greatest concern to our residents. |
