Putting Pride and Greed First, Menendez Risks Region’s Security
Mayor Glenn Cunningham won't bow to Robert Menendez – and allow the County Machine to plunder Jersey City. That infuriates the Congressman who dreams of crowning himself political emperor of Hudson County. The people of Jersey City, witnesses to Menendez’s spite, have endured a long series of petty reprisals and vendettas from the camp of the County Machine.
With the persistence of a bully used to getting his own way, Robert Menendez refuses to end the quarrel. His latest assault is the sabotage of Mayor Cunningham’s plan to save Jersey City taxpayers millions by refinancing the City’s bonds. Menendez’s pawns in the Jersey City Council so far have blocked the Mayor’s admirable effort to restructure the debt. When pressed, Menendez’s Council admit that the refi is a good idea. Wanting to keep Glenn Cunningham from success, that’s why they oppose it. The goal of the County machine isn’t to preserve the quality of life of the residents of Jersey City. The Congressman’s organization aims to thwart the Mayor, stir trouble and thus destroy the order and stability of Jersey City.
That individuals elected, entrusted, and sworn to serve the interests of Jersey City should, instead, declare open war on their constituents is in and of itself despicable. If this sort of political feud was a festering sore in some isolated locale, it would still be a disgrace. Here in Jersey City there’s the potential for true evil to take root in the furrows the Menendez group wants to plow. If in some sparsely populated backwater, the local government was hobbled and could no longer provide for its citizens, the suffering of individuals would of course be real. But, there would not be any chance of the pain setting into a terrible cancer growing and spreading in each and every direction.
That’s a real possibility here. Jersey City is an integral part of the Metropolitan Region. On 9/11, Jersey City emergency personnel were among the first to respond. People were evacuated from Ground Zero in New York City to the Jersey City Waterfront. Imagine that if instead of the calm and functioning municipality ready to aid a neighbor that the world saw that tragic day, Jersey City was paralyzed by traffic jams, misguided reprisals and other civil unrest. If that reflection was able to break out of its warped mirror, the horror of September 11 would not have been contained, but would have reflected outwards, like rings on a hellish pond struck by some devil’s stone. Last Summer, Menendez announced that he was initiating research “hoping to identify what Americas' frontlines -- our cities, counties, and states -- require to prepare for possible future attacks.” Well, he doesn’t have very far to look. The van used to deliver the explosives for the first World Trade Center attack was rented two blocks from the Congressman’s Jersey City office. The headquarters of the mastermind of that bombing also was only a couple of blocks away. I don’t know how often Congressman Menendez finds himself in Journal Square, but one would think that he’d already be very aware of the real threat that terrorism presents here in Jersey City.
We are lucky that Mayor Glenn Cunningham, former U.S. Marine and Federal Marshall, and the Department of Homeland Security understand that Jersey City’s ability to prevent and respond to threats is critical to the entire region. Mayor Cunningham began to develop a municipal division of homeland security in 2002. Last November, as part of the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI), Jersey City received a federal grant of over $17 million to prevent, respond and recover from acts of terrorism. Congressman Menendez should look up from his study long enough to consider the dangerous harvest that his program of destabilization threatens to reap.
