Looks like Nick Sacco is going to have a problem. Perez, 43, could have received 18-24 months, but Greenaway gave less after Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey D. Clark certified that Perez provided prosecutors with substantial assistance. The sentencing was the latest development in the ongoing corruption investigation that snared several other officials of the Hudson County township, including its administrator, Joseph Auriemma. A heating and air conditioning contractor, Leonard Farinola, pleaded guilty in February to bribing several North Bergen officials, including Auriemma, in return for contracts. In July 2002, Perez resigned from the North Bergen governing body, the Board of Commissioners, and pleaded guilty to taking $26,000 in cash and home improvements from Farinola. The specifics of Perez's cooperation were in a letter from prosecutors that Greenaway sealed at Clark's request because of the continuing probe. Auriemma was sentenced in July to a three-year prison term for accepting cash and free home improvements from a vendor who did business with North Bergen. He must also repay $33,792 to the township, the value of the benefits he received, and pay a $7,500 fine. Joseph Hernandez, the former purchasing agent of the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority, was sentenced in October to a 30-month prison term for taking bribes from contractors. Excavation contractor Domenic Grano was sentenced in September to 21 months in prison and fined $4,000. He admitted he gave cash, a personal watercraft and free construction work to Hernandez.
