Feb. 24, 2004 CUNNINGHAM READY TO REVIEW STATE BUDGET TRENTON - Senator Glenn D. Cunningham, D-Jersey City, made the following comments today after listening to Governor McGreevey's budget address. As a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, the Senator from the 31st District now begins the critical review process of scrutinizing the budget proposal before recommending a budget bill for the entire Legislature to consider in time for the new fiscal year beginning July 1. "In these economic times, I was impressed that the Governor was able to find $25 million in additional aid to municipalities. As a Mayor, I know the problems local governments face with property taxes. "A statewide increase of $200 million for direct public school aid properly places the State's priorities with the educational needs of our children. I also found it commendable that $15 million will be designated for school districts which demonstrate efficiencies or which are growing rapidly or have high concentrations of poverty. "Of critical importance are the provisions for fully funding FamilyCare, Medicaid dental services and the pharmaceutical assistance program for the elderly and the disabled. "And, I will strongly support the effort to provide adequate funding for the DYFS reforms needed to protect children who are at risk. I consider the responsibility to provide for children in need to be one of the highest callings we have as public officials. "I look forward to participating in my first budget review process with Senator (Wayne) Bryant (Chairman) and the rest of the committee. I will be looking to see if there is any additional funding available for Hudson County in terms of grants or aid for economic development. "I listened carefully to a well delivered speech by the Governor today and I may have heard an opportunity for the citizens of Jersey City when he mentioned 'Taxpayer Hero' grants for mayors who hold the line on property taxes. I owe it to the Jersey City residents in my Senate district to point out to the Governor that we've held the line on taxes in Jersey City for three straight years."
