DeGise beats Hartnett 3 to 1 in county race

Al Sullivan, Hudson Reporter, June 09, 2002

Minutes after the Hudson County polls closed Tuesday evening, people began to gather at Casino in the Park in Jersey City, arriving at first in twos and threes, then later by the dozens, people in t-shirts, people in suits, people of every ethnic and racial variety - part of the vast army that worked that day to make Tom DeGise the Democratic nominee for county executive in November.

DeGise, a former Jersey City council president, beat Bernard Hartnett for the Democratic nod on June 4 by a three-to-one majority. According to DeGise supporters, this vast margin sent a strong message to Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham, who had supported Hartnett. The voting populace rejected the mayor's attempt to take control of party leadership.
