Schundler's footsie

In an act of apparent treason against the party, several Democratic mayors in Hudson County have been pressing Republican Bret Schundler to run for mayor of Jersey City, according to several reliable sources. Their hope was that Schundler could beat the incumbent Democrat, Glenn Cunningham, who is engaged in a bitter rivalry with the party establishment in Hudson County. Schundler considered their pleas for months but decided recently that he will not run for mayor. His eyes are on the prize at Drumthwacket.

"He is very, very likely to run for governor," says Sal Risovalto, an adviser. Schundler informed the mayors of his decision before leaving on a trip to South Korea last week, where he is speaking about the benefits of the free enterprise system at a few universities, according to Risovalto.

Cunningham says the draft-Schundler effort was led by U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez. "Definitely, it was Menendez," he says. "But in Jersey City we don't let our mayors be picked by outsiders."
