April 5, 2004 FOR RELEASE: Immediate HUDSON SENATORS HONOR ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM TRENTON - A resolution sponsored by the Hudson County Senate delegation - Glenn D. Cunningham, Nicholas J. Sacco and Majority Leader Bernard F. Kenny, Jr., honoring the 2003-2004 high school state boys basketball champions from St. Anthony High School in Jersey City has been approved unanimously by the Senate. "As a native of Jersey City, I am honored to welcome the St. Anthony boys basketball team to Trenton," said Senator Cunningham, who is also the mayor of Jersey City. "With us today are members of that fantastic team, who had a 30-0 record this season. I am honored that it was a Jersey City school that produced such an outstanding group of athletes." "This squad is outstanding, not only in its play, but in the fact that they are a true team and stick together," said Senator Sacco. "I commend every player, Coach (Bob) Hurley and his staff for a great year - a year you really deserved." "A major part of this group's success comes from the support of the school and its faculty," said Senator Kenny. "I am proud to join with my colleagues in honoring one of the greatest basketball programs in the state of New Jersey." According to the resolution, the squad is 1 of only 4 teams in the school's history to complete an undefeated season. The team is ranked number 1 in the state, and it is ranked number 2 in the nation by USA Today. The members of this championship team are: Derrick Mercer, Marcus Williams, Ahmad Mosby, Ralph Fernandez, Miles Beatty, Justin Lewis, Shelton Gibbs, Sean McCurey, Otis Campbell, Qaysir Woods, Linoll Mercedes, Robert Bullock, Ahmad Nivens, Barney Anderson, David Bullock and Eric Centino. The resolution also recognized Head Coach Hurley; Assistant Coaches Ben Gamble, Tom Pushie, Darren Erman and Dan McLaughlin; team Trainer Phil Miller; and Managers John Cicchetti and Harry Traina. Members of the team were in attendance as well as Coach Hurley and the school's vice-principal, Sister Mary Alan. Team seniors Marcus Williams, Ahmad Mosby, Shelton Gibbs, Otis Campbell, as well as Coach Hurley and Sister Alan posed for photographs with Senate President Codey, Majority Leader Kenny and Senators Cunningham and Sacco. ###
