News From NJ Senate Democrats April 7, 2004 CONTACT: Cara Noel CUNNINGHAM: DYFS SHOULD MONITOR IMMIGRANT CHILDREN, AND WORK WITH POLICE TO TAKE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES TO CHILD WELFARE TRENTON - During today's hearing of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, Senator Glenn D. Cunningham called for the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) to monitor children of undocumented immigrants, within the child welfare system, as well as work with police officers to take preventative measures when dealing with the state's children. Human Services Commissioner James M. Davy noted that under DYFS' new plan, more attention would be paid to adolescents within the child welfare system. The Commissioner noted that these children have a hard time finding foster care and other services because they are older. "One out of every three children in the state has parents that are undocumented immigrants," said Senator Cunningham, D-Hudson, who is also a member of the Budget and Appropriations panel. "What happens to these children that come through the child welfare system, but are ineligible for assistance once they reach the age of 18? We cannot afford to let these children fall by the wayside." Senator Cunningham also noted that it is easier to prevent child welfare problems, than to deal with later repercussions. By monitoring children early, potential problems may be prevented, said Senator Cunningham. "As a retired police officer, I know that there are certain issues dealing with child welfare that would be greatly improved with the help of police officers," said Senator Cunningham, D-Hudson. "Police officers are in the community and get to know the residents. By creating a shared database between police departments and DYFS, they can work together and use preventative and early warning services to achieve a common goal, protecting our children. Today's hearing was among the first set of hearings by the Senate Budget and Appropriations panel on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2005. ###
