JC Democrats get a new leader On June 11, Jersey City Democrats also saw a change of leadership as Councilman Bill Gaughan took over the chairmanship from Bobby Jackson. Some political observers call Gaughan "first among equals" because of his tendency to rule by consensus. Unlike the change of leadership in the county, Gaughan takes over the post held by an opposing faction of the Democratic Party, portending a more troubled transition. "I'm leaving the transition up to the lawyers," he said, although he has concerns about the financial condition of Jersey City Democratic Party. Gaughan takes over as chairman in the same week in which Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham sought to evict him from his office in the Heights, hardly a gesture of peace after the hotly contested Democratic Primary. Although conflicts with the mayor's office promise to make for a bumpy transition, Gaughan said his aim is to bring the party together. He said he would be reaching out to many of the people involved in the conflict that tore apart the party in Jersey City over the last three months. Like county Chairman Kenny, Gaughan wants to go back to a more organized party structure, reestablishing the chain of command that starts with committeepeople and extends up to zone and ward leaders. ...
