Thanks to some really great movies, now everybody is familiar with Tolkien's Trilogy, the Lord of the Rings. Over the next twelve months, Hudson County is going to be the setting for a political Trilogy. With the primary and the November general election,
we'll see the first two installments. The conclusion, the Return of the King (by whatever definition you prefer) will be next year's Jersey City mayoral race.
For the primary, the Cunningham camp needs to define clearly their expectations and goals to the media, to Jersey City voters -- and to Congressman Payne and Congressman Rothman. Seemingly, from Congressman Rothman's comments on NJN, he's been told that the primary challenge is strictly a Hudson County matter. (From the manifold pained expressions on his face, Rothman still didn't appear very happy about the situation.) If the goals are communicated to (and through) the media, and the battle as it's fought is won, the headlines on the day after the primary will be JERSEY CITY GIVES MENENDEZ THUMBS DOWN instead of HCDO WINS BY 75%. If Jersey City voters are convinced that going to the polls and voting with Glenn will tell the world that Jersey City doesn't like people from North Hudson trying to push them around, crowds'll fill the polls on election day. If Jersey City residents perceive the race as a Children's Crusade, they'll stay home and take a nap.
Clearly (except by Divine intervention -- or that of Chris Christie), none of Cunningham's candidates have any chance of beating the HCDO crowd in the vote count. What Glenn can hope for is to get a large turnout in his favor in Jersey City. Another display of strength in Jersey City will futher discourage any serious challengers in the '05 Jersey City election. And, perhaps even more importantly, Glenn's achieving a strong win in Jersey City this time around will serve to dissuade significant investment -- political or financial -- in local opposition. A good show of support in Bayonne and Union City would be the icing on the cake. If Glenn gets some numbers south and north, he'll have extended his influence in Bayonne and achieved a beach head in Union City.
Of course, the HCDO must define the election by showing Glenn as the Hudson County version of Saruman, a false prophet doomed to failure and destruction. The HCDO will have to convice the media and the state and national Party leaders that a good showing in Jersey City only proves that Jersey City is politically isolated and that the situation is Glenn's fault. And to enlist outside support in containing Glenn, the HCDO must demonstrate that by attacking Payne and Rothman, Glenn is on the road to turning Hudson County into a pariah statewide. What the HCDO wants is to have Congressman Payne and Congressman Rothman ending every speech with GLENN MUST BE DESTROYED. In the NJN video, Congressman Menendez goes as far as to claim that Glenn Cunningham is impeding the effort to promote Kerry for President. Could this whole hubbub be a show of arms to convince the Democratic Party at the state and national levels of the need to provide financing for a GOTV effort in Hudson County during November's presidential election? The road goes ever on and on!
