Changing their minds on mayor

Administration responds to allegations of politicking, some council people retract accusations

APOLITICAL – Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham said that his post-election actions were devoid of political motives, and he presented clear evidence for his point of view.

Mayor Glenn Cunningham said last week the council has got it all wrong.

Addressing each allegation of political retribution one by one, Cunningham said that his motives for various recent decisions amount to nothing more than good government. The week before, the council had accused Cunningham of lashing out against supporters of county executive-elect Tom DeGise, and formed an ad hoc committee to investigate those claims.

DeGise won the Democratic nomination for county executive earlier this month, beating out a man supported by Cunningham.

During the council meeting, Councilmen Steve Lipski, William Gaughan, and Peter Brennan said they were personally affected by the mayor's actions. Lipski reported that the day after the primary election, fire officials visited his charter school three times to examine the sprinkler and alarm system.
