JERSEY CITY -U.S. Marine Steven Fulop, candidate for Congress, blasted operatives loyal to Congressman Robert Menendez during a news conference today when it was revealed that local police are investigating a group of "phony cops" who tried to intimidate his supporters. Fulop, who is challenging Menendez for the Congressional seat in the 13th District, stood side by side with two women who were approached by men wearing "police clothing" and were subjected to questions about why they supported Fulop's candidacy. These supporters signed petitions for Steve Fulop's candidacy for Congress and were pressured to recant their support. Fulop, who recently ended a tour in Iraq as a member of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserves, found the political activity reprehensible. "The right to vote and choose your political affiliation is one for the defining principles of being an American. It's disturbing that Menendez loyalists would stoop to this level of impropriety and I'm calling on him to end the shenanigans." Fulop said. Fulop took a leave of absence from his position at Goldman Sachs to join the U.S. Marines Corps Reserves following the attacks on America, September 11, 2001. He did a tour in Iraq during the war which strengthened his resolve to fight for American's values and freedom. "The process should not be tainted. The freedom to express our beliefs must be upheld. I fought for that and will continue to do so as the next Congressman representing the 13th District," Fulop said. This year as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. The Board of Education, we should not let Congressman Menendez turn back the clock and stop people from exercising their Constitutional rights.
Police are pursuing identifying the Menendez loyalists who wore police hats, shirts and
other identifying markers when they questioned residents from a predominantly minority
local housing complex about why they had signed Fulop's petitions to run for Congress.
