FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 19, 2004 STATEMENT FROM MENENDEZ FOR CONGRESS REGARDING HUDSON COUNTY "REFORM" DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE PETITIONS JERSEY CITY, NJ - Brad Lawrence, spokesman for Menendez for Congress, today made the following remarks in response to allegations set forth by the Hudson County `Reform' Democratic Committee: "Mayor Glenn Cunningham's Hudson County `Reform' Democratic Committee has a history of petition fraud dating back to its founding in 2002. In 2002, a Jersey City Police officer was ordered off the ballot after several petitions were found to be fraudulently circulated. In 2003, the `Reform' Committee filed a candidate for County Committee without her knowledge, forging her signature and fraudulently circulating her petition; they have repeated this offense again in 2004. Just last week, the `Reform' Committee's candidate for Jersey City School Board, Carmen Mendiola. was removed from the election ballot because she cannot prove the residency requirement, although she ran for State Senate in 2003. And, again, in 2004, the petitions filed for the `Reform' Committee's congressional candidate display the same patterns of fraud and irregularities, including forged signatures and dishonest circulation tactics. "Voters across the United States deserve to have candidates on their ballots who utilize legal methods to obtain the signatures necessary to qualify as primary candidates. Regardless of the level of government, elected officials are lawmakers not lawbreakers. Bob Menendez has dedicated his life to defending the principals of a participatory democracy and every citizen's right to vote. Mayor Cunningham's tactics of petition fraud annihilate the rights of honest voters and disgrace the freedoms we hold dear as Americans -- the freedoms our young men and women are fighting to protect daily overseas. "I am concerned and appalled at the continued pattern of fraud displayed by Mayor Cunningham and his `Reform' Committee. It is frightening to see that Mayor Cunningham, together with his party cohorts, continues to dishonor his public offices through illegal and fraudulent tactics and intimidation. After three years, it must be stopped. "Shame on you Mayor Cunningham, and shame on our candidates for allowing themselves to be part of this continuing pattern of fraudulent and illegal behavior." ### CAMPAIGN FINANCE OFFICE TELEPHONE: (201) 271-1661 • FAX: (201) 531-0724 - - - Editor's note: Two affidavits of forged signatures were included with this press release.
