: : TRENTON - First-term Senator Glenn D. Cunningham Jr. today said he is determined to find ways to increase opportunities for minority workers on public and private contracts, particularly through the current State school construction program.

: : "I sought a forum for my colleagues to listen to the men and women who are seeking work under plumbing, electrical and other construction-related contracts," said Senator Cunningham, Vice Chair of the Senate Labor Committee. "By defining the obstacles that are blocking these men and women from currently getting work, I am confident we will find ways to conquer those problems."

: : The committee was scheduled to hold its first hearing this evening at the Mary McCleod Bethune Community Center, 140 Martin Luther King Boulevard in Jersey City starting at 6 p.m.

: : A committee aide said late this afternoon that nearly two dozen people had signed up to testify before the committee.

: : "I would like to commend Senator (Stephen M.) Sweeney (Committee Chairman) for scheduling this hearing in Jersey City," said Senator Cunningham, who also serves as the Mayor of Hudson County's capital city. "We're here to listen and Senator Sweeney was gracious in providing this opportunity."

: : A second hearing to be held in South Jersey will be scheduled within the next several weeks, Senator Cunningham said.

: : "The point, of course, is to expedite the awarding of contracts which provide work for people who are being passed over at the current time," Senator Cunningham said.

: : In the past, State officials have said many minority businesses have been too small in composition to qualify for contracts under State bonding requirements.

: : "After listening to the problems and the practices of the past, we should be able to focus on the legislation needed to eliminate these problems for minority workers," Senator Cunningham said.

: : He said he supported the landmark New Jersey law adopted to authorize project labor agreements, but said at the time that he was concerned about its potential for blocking opportunities for minority workers.

: : "These hearings, thanks to Senator Sweeney, reflect my efforts to follow up on that concern," Senator Cunningham said.
