JOHNSON/MANZO MEASURE EASING SCHEDULING CONFLICTS FOR NATIONAL GUARD & RESERVE MEMBERS CLEARS PANEL Measure Would Grant Additional Leave for Weekend Training Drills
(TRENTON) – An Assembly panel today released legislation sponsored by Assemblymen Gordon M. Johnson and Louis M. Manzo that would entitle National Guard members and military reservists a leave of absence from their civilian jobs so they can participate in mandatory weekend drills.

The bill (A-1097) would require employers in both the public and private sectors to grant a leave of absence without pay or reassignment of work hours for employees who are members of the National Guard and military reserves. The leave of absence would be limited to two work days per 30 day period and can be utilized only for purposes of participating in weekend drills.

“Members of the National Guard and military reserves are dedicated men and women who are called upon to put their country before their careers,” said Johnson (D-Bergen). “It is imperative that these dedicated men and women are afforded the employment security they deserve for making numerous personal sacrifices in defense of our country.”

Under current law, members of the National Guard and Reserves are entitled to leaves of absence for active duty and active duty for training, but no provisions are provided for weekend drills -- which typically occur at a rate of one weekend per month.

“It is our civic duty to ensure the training schedule for these dedicated individuals is as uncomplicated as possible,” said Manzo (D- Hudson).

The Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs Committee released the measure 5 - 0. It now goes to the Assembly Speaker, who decides if and when to post it for a floor vote.
