It's clear to me that Dean was trying to turn the election into a repeat of the '64 Johnson-Goldwater race. For those of the youthful sort (or memory-challenged) LBJ ran as the PEACE candidate ("I will send no boys to wage an Asiatic war.") and was able to paint Goldwater as a dangerous war-monger. Johnson promised (and delivered) massive social programs of the FDR sort.

Ah, but Johnson was sitting President and did not have to navigate the dangerous primary straits!

I wonder if Gov. Dean promised the NJ set similar federal programs for the Megalopolis? That would have been a strong inducement to join the Dean team.
