From Donald's www.politicsnj.com website looks like Doria might want to be Senator - REMEMBER DORIA NOT MENENDEZ CONTROLS THE COUNTY COMMITTEEPEOPLE. "If Smith is tapped by the council to be acting mayor and runs for the job in November, the Senate seat would almost undoubtedly go to Joseph V. Doria, the mayor of Bayonne and a member of the state Assembly from 1980 until this past January. Doria, a source close to the mayor said, would take the spot if it were offered. Democratic county committee members from the 31st District will meet sometime in the next month to pick an interim senator. A special partisan election would be held in November to determine who fills the remaining three-plus years of Cunningham's term. Doria does have one powerful -- and unlikely -- ally in his corner: Gov. James E. McGreevey, who actually helped orchestrate Doria's ouster as the Assembly's Democratic leader in late 2001. Several sources say McGreevey's staff has told Doria and Democratic leaders in Hudson County that the governor would prefer Doria to Smith for the Senate seat. Why McGreevey wants Doria isn't certain. Speculation is that McGreevey trusts that Doria would support him on key votes, something he had to worry about with the maverick Cunningham. Of course, McGreevey is not on the best of terms with the HCDO's leaders, particularly Menendez, so how much weight his endorsement of Doria will carry is questionable."
