Chiappone Announces Candidacy Urban Times News March 14 - March 20, 2003 (BAYONNE) Councilman at Large, Anthony Chiappone, announced his intentions regarding the 3 1 St District State Assembly race during a 12:30 p.m. news conference, Tuesday, March 11, at 618 Broadway. Chiappone, 45, is regarded as a strong opponent for 9-term incum- bent, Assemblyman Joe Doria, who is also mayor of Bayonne. In the May 2002 mayoral race in Bayonne, Chiappone ran as an independent against the Doria slate and prevailed as Councilman at Large, getting near- ly as many votes for his seat as Doria did for mayor. As Assemblyman Chiappone will represent the residents of both Jersey City and Bayonne. Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, elected to Mayor in Jersey City in 2001, is run- ning for Senate in the 31St District and will be in attendance. "With Jersey City and Bayonne being so close to major industry and New York City, home-be focused on," Chiappone said. Chiappone, a self-employed photographer with his own business in Bayonne for the last 20 years, plans to take his message to the resi- dents of Bayonne and Jersey City, going door to door to emphasize his stand on homeland security, educa- tion, senior medical assistance and forcing State Legislatures to mandate Cable Television competition. "Many people are being held hostage to the cable companies, which is their primary source for information," Chiappone said. "Today companies agree to stay out of each other's turf. Without any fair competition, cable customers are forced to accept whatever rate they want to charge subscribers. Simply put, that's a monopoly. That's ille- gal." Chiappone won his bid for first Ward Councilman in 1998, fol- lowed by his victory in 2002 for Councilman at Large.
