As this was a public viewing and held in a public building, I don't see how anyone should have been barred from entry. Mayor Smith showed real class in the face of a classless act. It would behoove people to let the politics go to the wayside in a time like this and show some grace and dignity. There is a time and a place for everything but this wasn't the time nor the place. Sandy lost a lot of respect among some diehard Glenn supporters with that act.

: : I write this with no disrespect for Mayor Cunningham.This should be a time of mourning and healing but what I just read is unbelievable.I praise acting Mayor L Harvey Smith for allowing the family to give Mayor Cunningham a funeral made for a King.At the end of the day this will cost the tax payers close to a Million dollars and he will certainly get the brunt of it. He allowed Drayton and company to stay in City hall and out of respect for Sandy and Glenn made no changes yet he goes to a public viewing in city hall that he is the Mayor of and is asked to leave............SHAME ON YOU DRAYTON.IN ADDITION, IF THIS IS SANDY'S WISHES SHAME ON HER TOO!

Harvey Smith said he was barred from entering the rotunda at City Hall yesterday morning to pay his respects to Jersey City Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham. At about 10 a.m., when Smith said he arrived at City Hall, where Cunningham's casket had been open for public viewing for two days, a police lieutenant told him that he could not enter the building, Smith said. The lieutenant said he was relaying a message from Deputy Mayor Eugene G. Drayton that Sandra Bolden-Cunningham, the mayor's widow, did not want Smith allowed inside to see her husband, Smith said. Smith and Cunningham were frequent political adversaries. Cunningham defeated Smith in the Democratic primary for state Senate last year. City spokesman Stan H. Eason said he was unaware of the incident. Drayton could not be reached for comment yesterday. Smith, who was attending a Memorial Day service at Pershing Field yesterday, would only confirm that he was barred from City Hall, but would not provide further details. "I was in shock and saddened by the news (of the mayor's death). I wanted to pay my last respects in an inconspicuous, unobtrusive way," Smith said yesterday. "I have no other choice but to deal with the wishes of Mrs. Cunningham and the family . In deference to the family, I feel that enough has been said."
