By Steven Glazer Urban Times News March 21 - March 27, 2003 (Jersey City) Louis Manzo threw his hat in the ring for 31st District Assembly seat joining the ticket headed by Mayor Glenn Cunningham with Bayonne Council Member Anthony Chiappone. Manzo, a former Freeholder and Jersey City Health Chief rounds out a ticket that will go against the formidable Hudson County Democratic Organization. Freeholder Bill O'Dea told the enthusias- tic crowd that "the organization outspent us five-to-one last time and we outpolled them three-to-two. We intend to go up against the machine and we intend to win. We have been labeled mavericks and it is a lable that I wear proudly. Our strength is built on people, not on megabuck corpo- rate media campaigns." Manzo particularly has been stir- ring interest lately with a novel proposal to tax political campaign contributions. Manzo calls it his "Robin Hood Tax." "All campaign contributions would be taxed just as if it were ordinary earned income. The more you raise, the more you pay. The funds would be directed espe- cially for the benefit of children and sen- iors. I would want to see the money used to restore Seniors' Medicaid cuts and money just cut from the state budget to immunize approximately 6,000 kids in Jersey City," said Manzo. "I wanted to run because I think that the party in power has given up its right to govern and no longer represents the voters that put them in office. They have lost the right to represent the people. They only care about the holders of no-bid contracts," said Manzo. "That is why over in Bergen County, they get Xanadu and here in Hudson, we get raw sewage and household trash. They have sold out every retail merchant here in Hudson County. We are in danger of becoming the Garbage Capital of the East Coast, if not the country, thanks to these guys. But it's OK as long as the right people keep on getting their contracts. When they run a campaign fundraiser, they are looking out into a room full of contract holders. When we hold an event like this one we look out and see our friends and our neighbors, the people who with live with." Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham told the crowd "We are building a movement here to liberate our city from the power brokers. The whole system is geared toward them getting their buddies more contracts. We are going to move out and liberate other towns in Hudson County. With us everything will be out in the open.
