NewsFlash Home | More Jersey + Metro News Jersey + Metro News Democrats pick Doria to fill Senate seat held by Cunningham Doria, who is mayor of Bayonne, was unanimously chosen by members of the Hudson County Democratic Committee from the 31st Legislative District. Doria, who was uncontested for the seat, was also chosen to run for Cunningham's unexpired term in November. The committee is dominated by the Hudson County Democratic Organization, the county's traditionally dominant political apparatus. Doria, 57, was seeking his 13th term in the Assembly with the Democratic Organization's backing in last year's primary when he and his Senate and Assembly running mates were upset by an independent Democratic slate that included Cunningham for state Senate. Cunningham himself had the Democratic Organization's backing when he was chosen mayor in Jersey City's nonpartisan election in May 2001. Afterward, however, Cunningham broke with the organization amid a political dispute with Rep. Robert Menendez, D-N.J. Cunningham then formed his own faction, the Hudson County Democratic Reform Organization. Although the reform faction swept the 2003 primary, the Hudson County Democratic Organization retained a majority of the county committee seats, enabling it to install Doria in Cunningham's Senate seat. »
