Maybe like the Ledger just made the whole thing up for a April fools. As of lates, things are getting so topsyturvy it's hard to tell what's on the level anymore. : Today's Star Ledger: : McGreevey at odds with two of his top backers : Tuesday, April 01, 2003 : BY JEFF WHELAN AND JOSH MARGOLIN : Gov. James E. McGreevey is quietly distancing himself from two political power brokers who helped engineer his rise to power, opening a rift that could have enormous consequences for the state's Democratic Party. : . . . : Underscoring the problems, the governor recently called U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine (D-N.J.) and U.S. Rep. Robert Menendez (D-13th Dist.) to inform them of his "epiphany" and to seek their support should the dispute escalate, according to sources close to the governor and both lawmakers. : At the same time, Norcross and Lynch have grown increasingly frustrated with what they see as McGreevey's political bumbling and his low poll numbers. Norcross also has taken aim at the governor's plan to raise taxes on casinos, a move South Jersey lawmakers say could harm the region's economy. : . . . : Sources close to Norcross and Lynch dispute that analysis and point instead to what they say has been a succession of McGreevey blunders -- his trade mission to Ireland, his hiring of an unqualified homeland security adviser, and his choice of Joseph Santiago as State Police superintendent. Santiago quit in October amid unsubstantiated allegations that he had consorted with mobsters. : Some of the bad feelings surfaced over the political demise of developer Charles Kushner, McGreevey's biggest campaign contributor and his choice to chair the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Kushner resigned from the authority in February after Sen. William Gormley (R-Atlantic) raised questions about the legality of thousands of dollars of Kushner political donations. : . . . : But McGreevey advisers complain Norcross is seeking to expand his sphere of influence, and is contributing to divisive primaries in the process. One accused Norcross of having "a plan to take over the whole state." : They point to what they say is Norcross's support for Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham's state Senate bid against the Menendez- backed candidate. Sources close to Menendez say the congressman recently received an unsolicited phone call from Norcross denying involvement. Menendez is said to have warned Norcross, "If you come into Hudson County, we are going to have war." : The Lynch and Norcross camps vehemently deny they are backing Cunningham.
