"Winds of Change" Herald Campaign Kickoff Urban Times News April 4- April 10, 2003 Anthony Chiappone state Assernofy Willie Flood County Clerk Mayor Glenn D.Cunningham State Senator Melba Walsh County Executiv Lou Manzo State Assembly By UTN Staff Liberty State Park- Mayor Glenn D. Cunnignham opened the official campaign of the Reform Democrats heralding the "Liberation of Hudson County," flanked by a full slate of candidates on a beautiful, if blustery afternoon here. The ticket of Cunningham with Louis Manzo and Anthony Chiappone, both running for assembly seats, was Joined by Willie Flood Jerscy City and Melba Walsh of Bayonne. Flood is a long-time activist and career educator who is the Reform candidate for County Clerk. Walsh who had run for Bayonne council and actually won in machine votes, lost narrowly in highly controversial and contested absentee balloting. Walsh rounds out the ticket as the first woman to run for County Executive. Walsh said that her experience with the council race seeing the opposition up close only made her that much more determined to resist the Hudson County Democratic Organization's brand of politics. Flood said that "I will not he a no-show person. I will not be involved in a government process of no-bid contracts, and patronage and i av-for- play politics." in a remark aimed at the opposition. Flood was terminated from her position of 12 years when the opposition administration took office in what could only be seen as a politi- cal purge. Mayor Glenn Cunningham said "This is the beginning of the lib- eration of Hudson County: Operation Hudson Freedom. Things here have to change. It's good that we have this strong fresh breeze here, to keep away all the hot air coming from the court house." Cunningham apparently was joking about the announcement earlier the same morning on the County Court House steps of the opposition Hudson County Democratic Organization slate of candidates. That slate includes L. Harvey Smith who will oppose Cunningham in the race for the 31st. District Senate Seat. Smith won his current Jersey City Council seat only by riding Cunningham's coattails into office.
