John Henry wins! But at what cost? . . . 'John Henry, you going to have a heavy burden and you gonna have to tote it like a man son, like a man.' Next morning early, a thousand men are gathered in the valley at the foot of the mountain come to see a race against a man and a machine. The machine was over there and three men were tending to it, and John Henry was over here rubbing his hand over the shaft of his hammer and Willy Roy was counting out the drills. BAM! A pistol shot ran out and John Henry began slamming his hammer against the drill that Willy Roy was holding and the machine went jugga, jugga, jugga, jugga...bang! bang!... jugga, jugga..and they were even for a long time, but then the dust began to rise up and the dust came down and settled on John Henry. It began to mingle with the sweat that was pouring off of him. And it came down and got in the corners of his eyes and he tried to blink it away but it kept coming back. And every time he would do that he was losing ground. The machine was getting ahead, so he picked up his thirty-five hammer and started slamming that bug again, wang! wang! But the dust was getting in his eyes and he couldn't see and he had to drop it and clear his eyes. And the machine was way ahead and the sun was almost right over head, when the contest would end. So Johnny dropped the thirty-five pound hammer and picked up two forty-five hammers and he went wang!wang!wang!wang! Bang! The pistol shot sounded the end of the contest. The judges came out and they drove long poles down into those holes. The hole made by the machine, the hole made by John Henry. And they told the results to captain Tommy. Captain Tommy said, 'I'll be, mmm mmm mmm. Listen here folks. John Henry and the machine. The machine made eleven feet, four inches, the men shoulder's sagged. John Henry made fourteen feet, seven inches. The men whooped and hollered and Captain Tommy went over to congratulate John Henry. But John Henry didn't see his outstretched hand. John Henry fell over in the dust. John Henry had hammered on the mountain, and his hammer was strike and fire but he drove so hard that he broke his poor heart, that he laid down his hammer and he died." . . .
