Urban Times News Call 201-451-4131 to have the Urban Times News delivered to a commercial business. Jersey City, NJ, June 7, 2004 - James King, the Standard Bearer of the Jimmy King Civic Association announced today that the Association has settled its suit against Jason Slocum, the Hudson County Democratic Organization District County Committeeman in Ward C, for defacing the Association's billboard located on Route 139 (Upper Level) and Summit Avenue on March 24, 2004. "I am pleased that this case has finally been settled and our Civic Association is being reimbursed for the cost of replacing the sign on the billboard," King said. " It was a very offensive act and the young man who defaced the billboard has been appropriately reprimanded." The billboard's message and a photograph of King and the late Mayor Glenn Cunningham were covered over with black paint by Slocum. "Fortunately for us, a member of the Civic Association was driving by atthe time and saw Slocum committing this act of vandalism," King said. According to King, the Civic Association member called out to Slocum who jumped from the platform supporting the billboard and ran. "Our member gave chase and caught Slocum. He called the Jersey City Police Department who arriveq on the scene and placed Slocum under arrest," King said. The original criminal charges were reduced to a lesser count by the Hudson County Prosecutor's, allowing Slocum to avoid jail time. At a later court appearance, Slocum was ordered to pay restitution of an undetermined amount to the Jimmy King Civic Association. "All of our members are satisfied that this nasty situation has been adjudicated and the culprit has been adequately dealt with by the Court," King said.
