MARSHAL BACKS BAD GUYS OFF-RUN 'EM OUT OF TOWN NEXT

Urban Times News
April 11-April 17, 2003

By J.A. Andrews

Jersey City-It was like showing a
cross to a vampire. "The bad guys just can't
stand to see that badge," said Jersey City
Mayor Glenn Cunningham. When a cam-
paign ad appeared that included the mar-
shal's badge he used to wear, Cunningham's
political opponents reacted like any normal
bad guys would, says the former US
Marshal and US Marine. Cunningham is
running for the State Senate in the 31st
District.
It is not just symbolic, explains
Cunningham. "The real reason they hate to
see that badge is the background check. In
order to become a US Marshal I had to go
through a background check by the FBI that
took as long as it takes to have a baby: nine
months. They checked me 10 ways from
Sunday," said Cunningham, the former US
Marshal. "They found out things about me
that I did not know myself. If there had
been the least little thing in my past, any-
thing at all, I would have gotten knocked
out of the box. But, of course, there is
nothing and I did become a US Marshal.
That is why the bad guys cannot stand to
see the symbol. It stands for everything
they are not and cannot ever be."
Cunningham included a likeness
of the US Marshal's badge he used to wear
in his campaign ad in a local newspaper that
also showed him in uniform when he was a
US Marine. Cunningham says that he got a
phone call from an official with the US
Marshal service in Washington, DC. The
official said that his office had gotten a
phone call from the office of Congressman
Bob Menendez D-13. Menendez later
denied to the local paper that carried the ad
that he had made the call or that the call had
come from his office. It was evident that
the US Marshall's service had gotten a com-
plaint either directly from Menendez or
someone in his office or indirectly through
the Hudson County Democratic
Organization which he and his attorney
Donald Scarinci dominate. Scarinci i,
Treasurer of the Menendez for Congress
and the Hudson County Democratic
Organization also. Regardless the exact ori-
gin of the call, the US Marshal's service fell
compelled to contact Cunningham.
"I had three choices then," said
Cunningham. "Either I give in and take the
badge out of the ad or I refuse to take the
badge out of the ad. I would not consider
either of these two alternatives. The other
choice was to include a disclaimer in any
future ads saying that no endorsement of
my candidacy for 31st District Senate seal
is implied. So when you see future cam-
paign ads there will be a disclaimer of
endorsement. And then we'll run the bad
guys out of town. I wonder why they did
not call the Marine Corps also, while they
were at it. I really did serve in the US
Marine Corps, too," said Cunningham with
a grin. "Maybe they would like a disclaimer
from the Corps too." Regardless exact
details and legal fine points, there is no love
lost between the good guys and bad guys in
this real-life political melodrama z
