NEWARK -- The former police chief of West New York testified in federal court yesterday that he forwarded protection money to a politically connected Hudson County businessman and that he believed the money was shared with current Assembly Speaker Albio Sires, who is also the town's mayor.

Testifying at the bank fraud trial of businessman Rene Abreu, former Chief Alexander V. Oriente, 70, also told the court he believed Abreu funneled protection money from a reputed Cuban organized crime figure to Sires through the sale of tickets to political fund raisers for the mayor, many priced at $500 each.
