Fireworks are added for Jersey this 4th
Statue of Liberty's reopening rates salute
Saturday, June 26, 2004
By The Associated Press
For viewers in New Jersey, and particularly in Hudson County, part of the huge Macy's Fourth of July fireworks display won't be obstructed by the Manhattan skyline this year - a special tribute to the Statue of Liberty's reopening this summer.

Traditionally, the display is launched from the East River, on the eastern side of Manhattan. This will be the first time since the millennial celebration in July 2000, when a barge was moored near the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, that the fireworks have been launched on Manhattan's west, or New Jersey side.

This year one of the six fireworks barges will be moored in New Jersey waters near the statue, just off the shore of Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

Three barges will be moored in the East River, at traditional locations between 23rd and 42nd Streets, and two barges will moored by the South Street Seaport, near the southern tip of Manhattan, also on the east side.

Jersey City acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith said that this is a great opportunity for the residents of Jersey City to participate in the nation's display of patriotism.

"And what better place to watch the fireworks and celebrate America's independence than in Jersey City, where you can see not only Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, but also the beautiful Manhattan skyline, as well," Smith said.

Jersey City and The Star-Ledger of Newark are helping to pay for the New Jersey barge in the Macy's display, said Elena Kazan, a Macy's spokeswoman.

In April, the National Park Service said that the Statue of Liberty's pedestal - though not the internal spiral staircase to the crown - will be reopened to the public in July after being closed for security reasons since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

That's the main reason Macy's is extending its fireworks display, the nation's biggest, across the water from New York this year, Kazan said.

The show, scheduled to begin at 9:20 p.m. on July 4, is expected to draw 50,000 spectators to Liberty State Park and its vicinity.

Even before the fireworks the skies will play host to another spectacular show when at 8 p.m. a team of four A-10 fighter jets, courtesy of the 102nd Fighter Unit of Massachusetts, will fly over the state park.
