: Civil rights leader lashes out at Menendez

: Bergen Record
: Friday, April 18, 2003

: By STEVEN GLAZER
: STAFF WRITER

: A black civil rights leader on Thursday accused Rep. Robert Menendez of illegally raising money for local Democrats - part of the continuing fallout from Governor McGreevey's appointment of a black judge to the Supreme Court.

: The Rev. Edward Allen said he filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission to protest Menendez's criticism of the court appointment. In an unusually public intraparty dispute, Menendez has attacked McGreevey for passing over a Hispanic woman for the post.

: Allen, a Newark pastor and national board member of the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, described Menendez's push for more Hispanics in Trenton as "race-baiting."

: "Mr. Menendez believes he should use power of his to dislodge African-Americans from posts and positions of power they earned through service to the state," Allen said.
