FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sandra Cunningham Announces Foundation’s Mission Jersey City, N.J., July 1, 2004 – Sandra Bolden Cunningham, the wife of the late Jersey City Mayor and State Senator Glenn D. Cunningham, today announces the renewed mission of the Sandra and Glenn Cunningham Foundation to continue Mayor Cunningham’s legacy through the foundation they created. “In my time of mourning and healing, I want everyone to know how much I appreciate their love and support,” said Mrs. Cunningham. “I also want to thank the thousands of people who sent letters and cards, letting me know how they feel about Glenn, as well as those who have already contributed to this foundation as a way of continuing his great work and legacy.” The Sandra and Glenn Cunningham Foundation was initially formed three years ago when Glenn Cunningham became Jersey City’s first African-American mayor. Its aim is to provide educational opportunities for youth, including scholarships and special youth programs, as well as services for city residents. One developing Foundation scholarship fund will provide financial aid to C-level students who want to attend college but might otherwise be overlooked. The Foundation aims to not only provide these students with the monetary assistance they need to pursue higher education, but also the motivation and hope they require to achieve this goal, Mrs. Cunningham said. In addition, the Sandra and Glenn Cunningham Foundation will also provide a computer to each of the senior citizen buildings in Jersey City, so that the seniors can learn to use the Internet and communicate with their families. “Glenn spent a lot of time visiting with seniors across the city and this was something he wanted done,” Mrs. Cunningham said. “He felt that if the seniors were given the opportunity to use computers and the Internet, they would take advantage of that and the whole world of learning and opportunities it provides.” In addition to working with the foundation, Mrs. Cunningham said she will also strive to empower young people to be more community and civic minded, and teach them to use the ballot as a way of improving their community. “Voting makes a difference, especially if you want to have an influence on how we live,” Mrs. Cunningham said. “Glenn’s life was a testimony to that. Glenn Cunningham firmly believed that all politics is local. He also believed he could make people’s lives better. That’s his legacy.” Mrs. Cunningham said she is excited to begin working on continuing Glenn’s legacy, as it is how Glenn will continue to make an impact on the residents of Jersey City. “I encourage those people who believed in Glenn to stay active in the community and to get involved in the causes he believed in, such as youth and education, and to take pride in their history and heritage, because that is how we can make this city better,” Mrs. Cunningham said. The Sandra and Glenn Cunningham Foundation is located at 22 Willow Street, Jersey City, NJ 07305. Donations will be used for scholarships, youth education and other quality of life programs.
