Dear Friends and Neighbors:
The members of the Municipal Council and I thank all of you for the support you have shown to us this past month. The passing of Mayor Glenn Cunningham has been difficult for everyone in Jersey City, and we especially appreciate your thoughtfulness.
I am working now to move the City ahead, to heal the wounds and mend any broken fences that exist. I believe that while there will always be healthy differences among the members of our legislative bodies, our priority must always be you, the taxpaying citizens of Jersey City. I will never lose sight of the fact that we are here to serve you and the best interests of the City. '
As you will see from the statement enclosed, property taxes in Jersey City have been stabilized. It is my intent to maintain these rates for you. We are examining every City department and agency to make certain that they are operating as efficiently and costeffectively as possible and we are implementing remedies where they are needed. We are also working to improve the quality of services you pay for as well as the expediency and efficiency with which those services are delivered. Your desire for cleaner, safer streets is at the top of that list.
Rest assured that as Acting Mayor I will continue to address the concerns of all the people in every neighborhood of Jersey City, just as I have done in my three terms as your Councilman-At-Large. Please write or phone my office with your issues and suggestions. I have instructed our staff to treat each message with care and consideration.
Again, my thanks to you. I look forward to working with you to make Jersey City even greater.
Warmest regards,
L. Harvey Smith
