I'm addressing comments made by Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise following Sen. Glenn D. Cunningham's death.

Mr. DeGise had stated that I, along with my Assembly colleague, would definitely be "replaced" because the district's representatives no longer reflect the "ethnic diversity" of the area or population. I would first remind the county executive that you cannot replace that which was not yours to begin with.

If you can recall back one year, Mr. DeGise, the voters of the 31 st'District replaced your choices in the Assembly. You may choose to put candidates against us in the primary, but replacement is not a privilege you own. That privilege belongs to the voters, should they wish to exercise it.

As for your comments regarding "ethnicity," if this was really the issue, I am curious as to why you did not place a minority to fill the interim position of state Sen. Cunningham when you had the opportunity to do so. You had the chance to support Sandra Bolden Cunningham in place of Joe Doria, yet you did not express an ethnic concern then.

Finally, in your shortsightedness and ignorance, you neglected to even check the ethnicity of the people you are so quick to "replace". Are you even aware that I'm half Italian 'and half Hispanic? With a growing population in Bayonne and Jersey City, are you aware that I am currently helping to organize the first Hispanic Day Parade in Bayonne?

Mr. DeGise, be honest with the media and the public and acknowledge that "ethnicity" is not the issue here. The truth is, I consider myself an American first, and I take pride in the job I 'do to represent all of my constituents. The real issue here is that we are not a part of your exclusive club, the Hudson County Democratic Organization. You're not interested in ethnic representation. You're interested in HCDO representation.

" Finally, since, through your comments, you appear to be the "boss" of the HCDO, I would recommend that, since you wish to have the right to dictate who gets placed and who gets replaced, that you remove the word "Democratic" from the name of your organization and insert the word "Dictatorship." After all, with a huge county tax increase you have just passed along to your constituents of all ethnicities, I wouldn't want you to spend any more money changing the initials of the HCDO.
