: . . . : Menendez's rise in the high-powered world of national politics is a tribute to his cultivated abilities as well as his raw political skills. The post of caucus chairman wasn't simply handed to him; he had to campaign for it. Yet he's also been a patient mentor for some Garden State colleagues. "When I first came to Congress in 1997, Congressman Menendez was there to help me get adjusted to working in the House," says Steve Rothman, a Democrat who represents the 9th district. "I am forever grateful to him for the friendship and generosity he showed me then and all the kindnesses he has extended to me over all these years in Congress." : That doesn't sound much like the man who lords over one of the state's best-known political fiefdoms. While Menendez disputes having the local clout of New Jersey political warlords such as George Norcross III of Camden County, state senator Raymond Lesniak of Union County, and former state senator John Lynch. Menendez happens to be one of the most influential congressmen in Washington and a leader of the state's congressional delegation. Still, he's more often portrayed as a local power broker than a nationally respected legislator, revered by his Hudson County constituents and reviled by opponents, who consider him a throwback to the days of political machines. : Blame it on the Feud, the nasty, long-running battle that ensued between Cunningham and Menendez over local party politics, until the battleground fell silent in May, when Cunningham, 60, died after suffering a massive heart attack. The mayor's memorial service was moved to the Jersey City Armory to accommodate the overflow of mourners. Schools and government offices were closed on the day of the funeral, when a horse-drawn carriage pulled the flag-draped casket of the former Marine. The grieving process, though, was not devoid of political tensions. : . . . : For the complete article, please see the Link.
