Menendez: I start from the view of thinking about what is the national interest of the United States, and what is in the national security of the United States. The answer dictates what the policy should be in our relationships with every country in the world. In the context of Israel, the answers are rather simple. Israel is our major trading partner. Israel has historical ties to the United States. Israel is the only true democracy in that part of the world. In terms of the national security of the United States, Israel is the only unshakable ally that shares common democratic principles, a common vision of where we need to go, both in the world and in the region.
