JERSEY CITY- County Executive Candidate Melba Walsh proved triumphant yesterday when a Hudson County Superior Court Judge reinstated her name on the official ballot for the June primary race for Hudson County Executive.

Walsh, of Bayonne and a member of the Glenn D. Cunningham ticket for Senate in the 31st District, came off the ropes to defeat an apparently desperate challenge of her petitions to run for office.

On April 18, Walsh and independent candidate Jamie Vazquez found their petitions challenged by the Hudson County Democratic Organization. Following three days of hearings, Walsh and Vazquez found their petitions rejected by Deputy County Clerk Joan Arango because of "continuous and potentially fraudulent acts" in gathering signatures.

Reviewing the challenges, apparently Judge Arthur D’Italia did not agree with the dubious findings of the county clerk’s office. Now, incumbent Tom DeGise will have an opponent for the June 3rd primary.

“We appreciate D’Italia’s decision because it gives the people of Hudson County a choice,” Walsh said. “Why are they (DeGise) seeking to run unopposed? We disagreed with Arango’s decision. We feel the decision was prejudiced. The HCDO made the decision as well as the complaint against our petitions," Walsh said.

Walsh, Cunningham and assembly hopefuls Lou Manzo of Jersey City and Tony Chiappone of Bayonne, and Willie Flood county clerk) make up the Democrats for Hudson County slate.

“This only strengthens my resolve to take on and challenge the good old boys who for far too long have been picking cards from the bottom of the deck. Hudson County residents need a new deal,” said Walsh, hoping to become the county’s first woman county executive.

Mayor Cunningham, who was reached at the National Conference of Mayors in Houston, Texas following the court decision, was pleased to see that justice prevailed. “America is a democracy where each vote counts. The HCDO only wanted a one-sided race so that thousands of people’s voices would not be heard. Melba is the best choice for county executive because she will be a refreshing change from the way county government has been sorrowfully run in the past,” Cunningham said.////
