Just came from Healy's announcement that he's running for Mayor of Jersey City in the special election this November. Councilman Healy's wife and children stood by his side during the speech in the pavillion at Pershing Field park. A spirited crowd of over 100 rank and file Democrats, local business people, and several members of the administration of Former Mayor Bret Schundler attended the event. Neither Congressman Robert Menendez, State Senator Bernard Kenny, County Executive Tom DeGise, nor Councilman Bill Gaughan were there. I spotted a member of Robert Menendez's campaign staff. I asked the staff member if Bob Menendez was supporting Healy's campaign for Mayor. The reply was that "the Congressman is in Washington thinking about the convention." On the question if County Democratic Chair Bernard Kenny was supporting the Councilman's effort, Jim Kennelly said that Bernard Kenny has so far not done so. He went on to add that that support would be welcome but Councilman Healy would win through his own work and that of the people. I asked Healy's spokesperson, Maria Pignataro, her opinion about the opposition saying that Healy is the Heights and/or the Irish candidate. She said that Healy was a Judge and would serve all the people. By the way, Jim Kennelly insisted there be no hint that he was there on County time! Jim Kennelly told me that he was using a vacation day in order to support Jerramiah Healy's run for Mayor. In about an hour, I'll be posting images and video of the event.
