DUBLIN AND REFORM DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE WIN Urban Times News by Arnold W. Stovell In a tightly contested race for the Hudson County Freeholder seat vacated by former freeholder William Braker, Jersey City native and Cunningham protege, Jeff Dublin was elected 55-45 early Wednesday evening. The 35 year old, Department of Works supervisor defeated Hudson County nominee Bobbie Morgan, a former aide to Braker and crisis intervention teacher at Public School #12 in Jersey City. The 110 Democratic committee members living in the third (3rd) freeholder district were the only representatives allowed to vote, the meeting for that vote was held at P.S. #34 on the corner of Bergen And Wade Avenues. A sizeable crowd waited in the outside parking lot as the vote was taken. Some tempers flared as last minute committee members were temporarily prevented form entering after the official start of the meeting, but once allowed in focus was on the vote. Virginia Miller, who came out despite the cast upon her fractured ankle, describes the mood inside P.S. #34. "The committee members were very hyped up. People (Reform Democrats) were very excited about the vote because this is another chance for us to carry out the dream of Glenn Cunningham for a united Jersey City and county," she said. William Braker, a former deputy police director resigned after admitting that he had accepted Dublin is a favored son among the Reform Democratic organization. Not only did the beloved, deceased Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham choose him, but the community chose him. He was the unanimous choice as a nominee among all ward leaders. He has been a tireless activist in the community, coming from a legacy of civic involvement and achievement. He is a father and a source of inspiration for the youth with whom he connects so well. Reform Democrat Chairwoman Willie Flood speaks fondly when describing Dublin, "I am proud to be associated with this young man. I have watched him come up from ground zero. He is always working. He is always at the meetings. He works well with the young people and gets people out of their houses. He is the kind of young man we need to step up." While this victory will allow Dublin to fill the seat for the remainder of this term, he must still emerge victorious from a special election in November. In the excitement of the moment we asked Freeholder Dublin for his feelings after this victory. Dublin was humble and thankful, but just as resolute in the things he wants to see done by the county for the third (3rd) District. "First I want to thank God for without Him nothing is possible. I want to thank my father and the great Glen D. Cunningham. He is in the hearts of every Jersey City resident. I want to thank the first lady, Sandra Cunningham, the ward leaders, the Reform Democratic and the Independent Democratic organizations for all their help and supporting and showing confidence in me. I just want to say I intend to be a representative of the people and for the people. I intend to be visible in the district and active in the community. I want to see us build more affordable housing in the 3rd District. I know on the county level we have an affordable housing fund. I'd like to see that used to build more affordable housing because our people need it. I would like to see us develop better uses for our parks and create programs that provide youth development and education as well as recreation. I'd like to see us do some things for our seniors. They are the backbone of our communities and we need to have programs that address their needs. They said we were finished (when we lost Glenn Cunningham) but we're not. This is just the beginning and there will be no stopping us now."
