Dear Friends and Neighbors: For nearly twelve years it has been my great privilege to serve as your elected representative in City government. Each day, I thank God for your confidence and support, especially the support you have shown these past several difficult weeks. I love the people of Jersey City with all my heart. Since beginning my career as an elected official, I have worked hard and long to make life better for everyone here. That's my job, that's my passion, that's my uppermost priority. When I assumed the responsibilities of the Mayor of our great City, I also began working to unite all of our people and make us whole again. I know how much we can accomplish as one community with one cause. We all want the same things from our government and that is to improve the quality of life for everyone in every neighborhood without wasting one single tax dollar. I am reaching out to all of you to work with me to heal any wounds andmend any broken fences that exist. That would mean the world to me. I've invited you to join me here today as I declare my candidacy for Mayor of Jersey City. This is not a step I have taken lightly. I decided to enter into this special election only after prayerful consideration and consulting with my family and friends. The decisions we make, the policies we adopt in the next several months will affect all of our lives tomorrow and our children's lives for years to come. I believe government should work for the good of the people, and that the people should not have to work to keep politicians and their patrons happy. That's why I have and will continue to go to the mat to stabilize property taxes and make our neighborhoods safer, our streets cleaner and opportunities more abundant for everyone. As your Mayor, I will redouble my efforts work with everyone all of our State, federal and local government leaders to make certain that you get those things you need and want. That's the way I did it when I initiated the First-Time Homeowners Program that provides up to $50,000 for families to purchase their first house. That's the way I did it when we got $1.5 million to put 20 new police officers on our streets. That's the way I did it to get the MLK HUB up and running, Lafayette Village constructed, P.S. 17 built and P.S. #3 under way. That's the way I did it when we brought Goldman Sachs, Morgan-Chase, the Doubleday, Hyatt Regency and Marriott Hotels and Macy's and Target here. That's the way we will do things when I am Mayor, because this is not the old Jersey City. is is a new, world-class Jersey City and I will ake certain it has a government to match. A government that is inclusive of ALL people. A government that is guided by principle and conducted with integrity. A government we can all be proud of. I cannot do that without your support -- and your vote on November 2nd. There are four generations of Smiths living here in Jersey City: my mother, my wife and I, our children and our grandchildren. You and my family share the same values and dreams. Let's work together to make them happen. My thanks to all of you for coming today. I look forward to meeting as many people as I can in the months ahead. God bless you all, God bless Jersey City and these great United States of America.
