Walsh Mugged Again, Vazques Pushed Off Ballot, By HCDO Urban Times News, April 25 - May 1, 2003 By UTN NEWS Jersey City-The Hudson County Clerk disqualified the nominating petitions of two challengers for the office of County Executive after three days of hearings. Deputy County Clerk Joan Arango rejected the petitions of Melba Walsh, of Bayonne, running on the Democrats For Hudson County State of Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham, because of "potential" fraud in gathering signatures. The petitions of independent Democrat Jaime Vazquez, of Jersey City, were also disallowed on a tech- nicality, but Vazquez was given time to cor- rect those faults. Walsh and her attorney, Joseph Terula, said the decision will be appealed in court. Walsh said she is confi- dent the courts will restore her to the ballot Apparently, the outcome of the proceedings were sufficiently important for the HCDO that Representative Robert Menendez D-13 made a brief in person appearance at the hearing offices during the proceedings. The office of County Clerk itself is one of the offices up for grabs in the coming primary that will also pit challenger Willie Flood, running with Walsh on the Democrats for Hudson County, against incumbent Janet Haynes of the Hudson County Democratic Organization. Flood's petition was not challenged. Walsh and Vazquez both are vying for the office of County Executive running against incum- bent Tom DeGise, who is running on the HCDO ticket. DeGise will be unopposed if Vazquez and Walsh are unable to overcome disqualification. The Hudson County Democratic Organization challenged the petitions of Walsh and Vazquez. "We're clearly in dis- agreement (with Arango). We feel the deci- sion was prejudiced. The HCDO made the decision as well as the complaint," Walsh said. Walsh had a similar experience with HCDO tactics one year ago when she actu- ally won election to a council seat in Bayonne on the machine vote tally. Walsh then lost by 12 votes when election workers delivered absentee ballots to overcome Walsh's lead of more than 100 votes on machine-counted ballots. Superior Court Judge Francis McLaughlin found numerous "irregulari- ties" in the handling of the absentee ballots but upheld the election result anyway. McLaughlin said that though there were numerous irregularities, he did not find suf- ficient reason to overturn the election. Walsh said the previous HCDO victory was not in the voting, but in the counting of the votes. Court testimony disclosed that numerous absentee ballots were collected from residents planning to be at the Jersey Shore for a long weekend. All of those bal- lots were delivered by hand in unsealed envelopes by a Bayonne municipal worker who also worked for the Hudson County Democratic Organization on city time z
