In not much more than two months, Jersey City gets to vote for both President and Mayor. As this election for Mayor is during a Presidential election year, it will be interesting to see if any of the candidates for Mayor try to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack by taking positions on national issues. With terrorism as both a local and a national concern, this could be an effective tactic. Given the Jersey Cityite's view of the world, the choice of Commander in Chief shrinks on the horizon in comparison to the up close and personal of who gets to rule the the roost at 280 Grove for less than a year. But that's not the bird's eye vies of the State and National Democratic organzations. When the polls showed the presidential campaigns as tied in New Jersey, I speculated that the Democratic Party would watch and restrain the Jersey City Mayoral candidates. Then, with the possibility of a close presidential election in New Jersey, if the Jersey City local race turned into a circus, that would pose a risk to the Hudson County Kerry vote. Now that recent polls show New Jersey leaning towards Kerry, there isn't really a reason to worry about Jersey City lousing up the bigger picture -- no reason to promise consolation prizes (or blows about the head and face from blunt objects) for the losers. It looks like Jersey City could see some very aggressive campaigns for Mayor. Now, for those that are really in it to win it, they better be prepared to use their elbows -- and to watch out for flying elbows! And that brings up another question, which of the candidates are really running? Wandering around town asking for money to throw parties and hire friends to work on a campaign is a great way to spend a Summer vacation. Others will be warming up for a Council run this Spring. Certainly some of the candidates are intended as spoilers -- just there to draw votes from a serious candidate. The deadline for the filing of petitions for both the Mayor and State Senator in the 31st is September 15th. As the campaigns won't really start their engines until after Labor Day (and pop the clutch the next week after things settle down after back to school week), there's plenty of time for prospective candidates to gather in the wings. So far though, on the part of Joe and Jane Citizen, I really don't see much enthusiasm concering the election at all right now. Of course, this might very well change once things heat up in September. And if a candidate receives the strong backing of the Cunningham organization (and particularly if there is a resulting consequent vice a versa, every action having an immediate and equal reaction, ya' know), interest in local politics will go from 0 to 100 in just a few seconds.
