Jim McGreevey's resignation yesterday, (and the revelations that came with it), represent the latest assault on an administration that has been rife with scandal and corruption from its inception. The allegations and the scrutiny of those activities are best left to the media, pundits and politicians on both sides of the aisle, who are better suited and eager to do it. But for the average New Jersey citizen, the issue is how quickly we can put this behind us and restore integrity to the Governor's Office, and it is here that McGreevey has dealt his most lethal blow. Resigning was surely the right thing to do, but it should be effective immediately, not 3 months from now. To suggest that he can remain effective as anything more than a distraction is absurd. No corporate or private entity would allow him to remain. Why must we? McGreevey should step down immediately and allow the citizens of New Jersey to exercise their constitutional right and elect a new Governor for the state. Instead, he has chosen to extend his legacy of corruption by blatantly manipulating the political process, making a mockery of the state constitution and adding insult to injury for the voting public. By resigning in November, McGreevey insures that we are not allowed to freely elect a new Governor, as is our democratic right, but rather that the remaining two years of his term are filled with a non-elected political appointed interim Governor. We deserve better than that. McGreevey should end his term in office, not by caving into the pressures of the Democratic Party leadership, but by returning the office of the Governor to the people, to whom it truly belongs.
